How you can support dolphin conservation

Written by Delphinus | Dec 9, 2022 4:00:00 PM

Did you know that when you choose a Delphinus habitat, you also support the conservation of dolphins and their ecosystem? In addition to sharing our love for the ocean, caring for dolphins moves us every day to improve our care, feeding, and conservation measures to positively influence dolphin and human families. In this article, we’ll tell you how you can support dolphins.La pirámide de la conservación de delfines

All of our efforts are focused on the conservation pyramid, which is composed of five elements:

Animal welfare: It is the foundation on which the other elements of the pyramid are based. This means that all our actions, decisions, the design of the habitats, and the different swimming experiences are the focal point for the welfare of our dolphins. To achieve this, our team is made up of experts in marine life and we have national and international alliances with organizations focused on the welfare of marine fauna.

Education: Education is essential so that more people can respectfully and consciously approach the oceans and their beings. That is why we implement the Delphinus Environmental Education Plan (PEAD), aimed at employees, visitors, and society in general. Among the PEAD programs are guided tours, and awareness about climate change, pollution, and overfishing, among others.

Research: We have a permanent program that promotes scientific research of different dolphin species in branches such as marine biology and specialized veterinary practices. This is our way of contributing to the generation and distribution of knowledge of these beautiful aquatic mammals, not only in Quintana Roo but in oceans in general.

Rescue and Rehabilitation: Delphinus participates in different rescue and rehabilitation efforts for wild animals. As a founding member of the Mexican Association of Habitats for the Interaction and Protection of Marine Mammals, A.C. (AMHMAR) and being a full member of the Quintana Roo Marine Mammal Stranding Network, we collaborate hand in hand with the authorities to help animals in need.

Conservation: All these actions influence and build the sustained conservation of dolphins, marine species, and oceans. We are aware of environmental problems and our desire is to build a better planet for humans and animals, especially for our beloved dolphins and the oceans.

The importance of sustainable tourism

We align ourselves with the guidelines proposed by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to offer the best tourist experiences that are sustainable and responsible for animals and the environment. We want more and more families to choose conscious options for healthy recreation, which help them approach marine life and the region’s culture in a respectful manner.

Animal welfare program

Dolphins and marine fauna are the heartbeats that keep our organization alive and that is why their welfare is our priority. Our biologists, veterinarians, and trainers keep in mind the 5  essentials of animal welfare:

  • Nutrition
  • Behavior
  • State of mind
  • Physical Health
  • Environment

We take detailed care of their diet and rest times, and we monitor their behavior and health at all times to provide them with the best quality of life. And this effort has been awarded by the American Humane Association (AHA), which in 2019 recognized Delphinus as one of the 4 international organizations to receive the Humane Conservation certificate.

Beach cleaning programs

Since 2013, we have had a permanent volunteer program for cleaning beaches and mangroves in the region. Together with other organizations, we have participated in 36 beach cleanups through the year 20202 in which 5,314 volunteers have participated, managing to collect a total of 14.6 tons of waste.

Our habitats

Our 6 habitats and the aquarium in Quintana Roo also represent an important source of substantial employment in harmony with the environment. When you choose to spend a day in our habitats, you not only contribute to marine welfare; you also support the economy of the region and the people who are part of the Delphinus family.
