When people think of Delphinus, they often imagine an encounter with dolphins in the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean. However, behind every experience lies a story that began more than three decades ago and has evolved alongside a clear vision: bringing people closer to the ocean to inspire them to care for nature.
The history of Delphinus began on June 28, 1990, in Quintana Roo. From its earliest years, the organization has pursued a purpose that remains relevant today: reconnecting people with nature, especially with the marine environment through interactive programs, to encourage active participation in its conservation.
Over time, this purpose was summarized in a phrase that is now part of the institution’s identity: “For a Brilliant Blue Planet,” a call to recognize the importance of the oceans to life on our planet and our shared responsibility to protect them.
In 1992, Delphinus Xcaret began operations, marking the start of a new era for responsible interaction between people and marine mammals in Mexico.
That same year, a historic event took place: the birth of Xuna, recognized as the first female dolphin born and successfully raised under professional care in Mexico. This event represented a major advance in knowledge about the biology, reproduction, and care of the species, while also laying the foundation for the future development of specialized animal welfare programs.
During the following years, Delphinus continued to grow by opening new habitats and programs, consolidating an experience centered on education, learning, and professional animal care.
Today, the organization integrates several components that characterize modern zoological institutions around the world:
This vision reflects a global trend in which zoological institutions seek to contribute to scientific knowledge and biodiversity protection, while also creating meaningful experiences for their visitors.
The expansion of Delphinus also reflects the tourism and environmental growth of Quintana Roo, as the organization has brought millions of visitors closer to marine life.
Every interaction seeks to spark curiosity and admiration for the oceans. After all, it is difficult to protect what we do not know. Dolphin encounters therefore become an opportunity for people to discover the complexity of these animals and understand the importance of conserving marine ecosystems.
In 2025, Delphinus celebrated 35 years of history. During this time, it evolved from a pioneering company in the Mexican Caribbean into an organization that integrates animal welfare, education, research, and sustainability as part of a single mission.
The history of Delphinus is also a story of evolution: that of a company that understood that the connection between people and nature can become a powerful tool for inspiring respect, knowledge, and action on behalf of the oceans.
And that story continues every day, with each visitor who discovers that behind a dolphin encounter lies something much greater: an invitation to build a better future for our brilliant blue planet.
