The first birth of a dolphin calf in our facilities took place in Xcaret on September 23, 1992. "Xuna" is a female individual that, on an apparent unprecedented event in Latin America, made history breaking the record of survival in our country. Nowadays, she is the mother of the first calf of the second generation born in Via Delphi.
"Xuna" arrival became an invaluable opportunity for the team at Via Delphi and the Xcaret Park, in order to gain knowledge, sensitivity and satisfaction. This extraordinary result of our work was, for our visitors, a living proof of our love and respect for these animals and our interest for their conservartion.
On February 1993, we began training for the open water scuba program, which consisted in getting our dolphins accustomed to follow a motorboat and interact with divers. Because of the special dedication required, this program was offered during specific seasons, once a day and it only allowed the participation of four visitors.
On May 1996 we constructed a new area in order to develop a third program meant for visitors interactive participation. We began offering this program with dolphins on July of the same year that we named "Interactive Friendship".These activities were originally designed for children because of the imitation games and the complementary educational activities. At the end it developed into a family program that resulted in the construction of a new platform that could fulfill the needs of the new program.
At the same time our delphinarium was first conceived and started to grow, there was an idea to develop a program for students of public schools of the area, were we could develop a higher capacity of appreciation and respect towards all living beings. In 1995 the "Educational Interaction" program began and still operates up till now following the same objectives, with students of our state and dolphins from the Xcaret and Xel-Ha Parks.
In April 1998 we began operating our Aquarium Delphinarium, the second delphinarium in our eco-archeological park in Xcaret. This architectural achievement brings the sea into land and includes a tunnel that allows the observation of dolphins underwater. This delphinarium offers interactive programs and has office areas and an auditorium for educational purposes.
From May thru August 1998, five calves were born in our Escollera delphinarium, a unique event that gave us the opportunity to carry on, in every one of our parallel programs, investigation projects that were of great interest for the scientific community, a situation that gave us great pride as Mexicans.
In April 1998 we hosted the XXIII International Reunion for the Study of Marine Mammals.
On November of the same year, during the Annual Conference of the International Marine Animal Trainers' Association (IMATA), we gave two formal presentations on our installations and the successful reproduction program. This event held in Algarbe, Portugal, were over 400 people from all over the world involved with the world of marine mammals assisted, gave us great international relevance.
In May 1999 at the request of the Belizean government, Xcaret and Via Delphi participated in the rescue of an orphan manatee named "Hercules". The manatee recovered acceptably and after remaining under our care for two years, he was released in its place of origin.
Our seventh calf was born on August 1999, in our Escollera delphinarium. On the same month but a year after, Via Delphi welcomed "Ka'an", our eighth calf.
The International Marine Animal Trainers' Association (IMATA) held for the first time its Annual Conference in a Latin American country, on October 2000. Our Xcaret Park registered 500 of the 900 members, who elected us for the "People's Choice Award" that is given to the person, group or institution, whose contributions during the event are considered the most important.
